Steven, if I lived in Southern California I would run the A/C in the "winter" as well.
As it is, I do NOT open the heater vent in my room in the winter, and I am very liable to crack the window open. I have been known to turn off the heater and open the front door when the temperature is around 45 or 50 degrees outside.
By the way--California does not have a "winter. They have Summer and Rainy.
